Time spent in bookshops can be most enjoyable, whether you are a book-lover or merely you are there to buy as a present. You may even have entered the shop just to find shelter from a 36 . Whatever the reason, you can soon become totally 37 your surroundings. The desire to 38 a book with attractive “dust-jack” is irresistible(不可抵抗的)although this method of selection ought not to be 39 ,as you might end up with a rather 40 book. You soon become absorbed in some book or 41 ,and usually it is only much later that you realize you have spent far too much time 42 ,and must dash off to keep some forgotten appointment-without buying a book, 43 .
This opportunity to escape the realities of everyday life is, I think, the main 44 of a book- shop. There are not many places where it is possible to do this. A music shop is very much like a book-shop. You can 45 such places to your heart’s content. If it is a good shop, 46 assistant will approach you with inevitable(必不可少的)greeting: “Can I help you, sir?” You needn’t buy anything you don’t want. In a bookshop an assistant 47 remain in the background until you have finished browsing. Then, and 48 ,are his services necessary. Of course you may want to find out where a particular section is, but when he/she has led you there, the assistant should 49 carefully and look as if he/she is not interested in selling a 50 book.
You have to be careful not to be attracted by variety of books in a bookshop. It is very 51 to enter the shop looking for a book on ancient coins and to come out carrying a copy of the latest best-selling novel and perhaps a book about brass-rubbing-something that had 52 vaguely(含糊的)interested you up until then. This volume on the subject, however, 53 be so well illustrated and the part of the text you read proved so interesting that you just had to buy it. This sort of thing can be very dangerous. 54 running up a huge account, you can 55 a great deal of time wandering from section to section.

37.A.unaware of B.interested in C.absorbed in D.satisfied with
38.A.take out B.pick out C.take up D.pick up
39.A.learned B.followed C.taken D.given
40.A.interesting B.dull C.handsome D.regretful

第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中选出最佳选项。
A
I’ve been watching the World Cup for years and have always rooted for Romania, since that’s where both of my parents were born. It’s disappointing that they didn’t qualify this year but it’s so difficult to qualify in Europe since there are just so many strong teams.
I watched the USA/Czech game because I heard that the US team was supposedly very strong this year. Early on, in about the 6th minute the Czech scored just a beautiful goal that wasn’t the keeper’s fault at all. It was perfectly placed.
From then on, the US could not get anything going. Frankly, in the first half they had only one legitimate scoring chance. The Czechs played well defensively and the US team couldn’t find a way through. I would have thought that they would have tried some long balls, but they didn’t seem to try this option.
Even with the Czechs 2-0 up they still kept 5the pressure on and countered quickly giving them more chances. Not till the score was 3-0 did the US actually have a few chances. Johnson, who plays professionally in the US, had a couple of shots when the game was already a foregone conclusion. All in all, I wasn’t impressed with the team one bit. They seemed to lack creativity and they didn’t play as a unit.
The Czechs looked like a well oiled machine and if they continue to play like they did I think they will challenge for the 2006 World Cup. As for the US, I don’t think they will get past the first round. It looks like they’d need a decisive win over Italy and I just don’t see that happening. The US has lost all of the eight World Cup games they have played in Europe and they might not win a game this year either.
56.From the first paragraph, we can infer that .
A.the author is an American
B.the author is content with the Romanian among the strong European teams
C.the Romanian team has made a little progress these years
D.the author is always supporting the Romanian team

58.According to the passage, the US team was beaten because .
A.they didn’t play as one creatively B.they found no chance to kick a goal
C.they failed to kick some long balls D.all of the above
59.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A.Whether the US team can enter the second round is decided by the game with Italy.
B.The US team had no shots till the game drew to an end.
C.Not only did the Czechs counter quickly but also they defended well.
D.The US team never won the World Cup games including a game of 2006.

C Animals and the places where they live are getting pushed aside as households (家庭) decrease in size and increase in number. Smaller numbers of people per household on average use more energy and goods per person. Greater numbers of households require more natural resources for construction. The possible result of this double problems may be that there are not enough natural resources to meet consumers’ demand without endangering habitats important to biodiversity. Personal freedom and social choice may come at huge environmental cost. Direct cots include visible damage to animal habitats and plant life. Indirect costs include the release of more greenhouse gases. The effects of such “personal freedom and social choice” have already surfaced in southwest China’s Wolong Nature Reserve. In Wolong, they found that a reduced average household size was directly tied to an increase in homes, and thus an increase in the amount of firewood used for cooking and heating. The rise in wood fuel use has led to the disappearance of forests and to the loss of habitats for giant pandas. Curious about whether other parts of the world were experiencing a similar situation, they enlisted a team of researchers including Stanford’s Paul Ehrlich, well-known for his population studies, to find out the household dynamics in 141 countries-between 1985 and 2000. Their study proved that the Wolong problem is part of a global trend. In the 76 countries considered biodiversity “hot spots”, such as the United States, Brazil, Australia and Kenya, the number of households grew yearly by 3.1%, while the population increased just 1.8%. Meanwhile, the number of people per home dropped from 4.7 to 4.0. The decrease in household size has resulted in 155 million additional households in hot-spot countries, almost always limiting biodiversity. In the 65 non-hot-spot countries―those without high-density areas of animals and plant species―similar results were found, though to a lesser degree. Even in countries experiencing population decrease, such as New Zealand, the number of households still increased because of a reduction in household size. 63.What is mainly discussed in the passage ? A.Reduction in household size and increase in household numbers is a danger to nature. B.Reduced household size leads to an increase in household numbers. C.Modern homes consume more natural resources. D.How to meet consumers’ demand without endangering animals and their habitats. 64.It can be learned from the passage that China’s Wolong Nature Reserve . A.is a place where giant pandas and their habitats are not affected B.is a place where animals and their habitats are seriously damaged C.sets a good example of protecting animals D.is facing the same threat as many other parts of the world 65.Which of the following is best supported by the last two paragraphs ? A.The threat to nature from reduction in household size is a worldwide problem. B.Biodiversity is better kept in countries with smaller populations. C.Biodiversity is better kept in hot-spot countries. D.Both hot-spot countries and non-hot-spot countries face threat of the same percentage. 66.Which of the following can best describe the feeling of the author? A.Disappointed. B.Hopeful. C.Worried. D.Angry.
D Many artists late in the last century were in search of a means to express their individuality (个性). Modern dance was one of the ways some of these people sought to free their creative spirit. At the beginning there was no exacting technique, no foundation from which to build. In later years trial error and genius founded the techniques and the principles of the movement. Eventually, innovators (改革者) even drew from what they considered the dressed ballet, but first they had to discard (丢弃) all that was academic so that the new could be discovered. The beginnings of modern dance were happening before Isadora Duncan, but she was the first person to bring the new dance to general audiences and see it accepted and acclaimed (称赞). Her search for a natural movement form sent her to nature. She believed movement should be as natural as the swaying of the trees and the rolling waves of the sea, and should be in harmony with the movements of the Earth. Her great contributions are in three areas. First, she began the expansion of the kinds of movement that could be used in dance. Before Duncan danced, ballet was the only type of dance performed in concert. In the ballet the feet and legs were emphasized, with virtuosity shown by complex, codified positions and movements. Duncan performed dance by using her body in the freest possible way. He dance stemmed from her soul and spirit. She was one of the pioneers who broke tradition so others might be able to develop the art. Her second contribution lies in dance costume. She discarded corset, ballet shoes, and stiff (拘谨的)costumes. These were replaced with flowing Grecian tunes, bare feet, and unbound hair. She believed in the natural body being allowed to move freely, and her dress displayed this ideal. Her third contribution was in the use of music. In her performances she used the symphonies of great masters including Beethoved and Wagner, which was not the usual custom. She was as exciting and abnormal in her personal life as in her dance. 67.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage ? A.The Evolution of Dance in the Twentiech Century B.Artists of the Last Century C.Natural Movement in Dance D.A Pioneer in Modern Dance 68.According to the passage, what did nature represent to Isadora Duncan ? A.Something to conquer. B.A model for movement. C.A place to find peace. D.A symbol of disorder. 69.Compared to those of the ballet, Isadora Duncan’s costumes were less . A.costly B.colorful C.graceful D.restrictive 70.What does the paragraph following the passage most probably discuss ? A.Isadora Duncan’s further contribution to modern dance. B.The music customarily used in ballet. C.Other aspects of Isadora Duncan’s life D.Audience acceptance of the new form of dance. E The motor vehicle has killed and disabled more people in its brief history than any bomb or weapon ever invented. Much of the blood on the street flows essentially from uncivil behavior of drivers who refuse to respect the legal and moral rights of others. So the massacre (大屠杀)on the road may be regarded as a social problem. In fact, the enemies of society on wheels are rather harmless people just ordinary people acting carelessly, you might say. But it is a principle both of law and common morality that carelessness is no excuse when one’s actions could bring death or damage to others. A minority of the killers go even beyond carelessness to total negligence. Researchers have estimated that as many as 80 per cent of all automobile accidents can be attributed to the psychological condition of the driver. Emotional upsets can distort drivers’ reactions, slow their judgment, and blind them to dangers that might otherwise be evident. The experts warn that it is vital for every driver to make a conscious effort to keep one’s emotions under control. Yet the irresponsibility that accounts for much of the problem is not confined to drivers. Street walkers regularly violate traffic regulations, they are at fault in most vehicle walker accidents ; and many cyclists even believe that they are not subject to the basic rules of the road. Significant legal advances have been made towards safer driving in the past few years. Safety standards for vehicle have been raised both at the point of manufacture and through periodic road-worthiness inspections. In addition, speed limits have been lowered. Due to these measures, the accident rate has decreased. But the accidents experts still worry because there has been little or no improvement in the way drivers’ behave. The only real and lasting solution, say the experts, is to convince people that driving is a skilled task requiring constant care and concentration. Those who fail to do all these things present a threat to those with whom they share the road. 71.What is the author’s main purpose in writing this passage ? A.To show that the motor vehicle is a very dangerous invention. B.To promote understanding between careless drivers and street walkers. C.To discuss traffic problems and propose possible solutions. D.To warn drivers of the importance of safe driving. 72.According to the passage, traffic accidents may be regarded as a social problem because . |
A.autos have become most destructive to mankind
B.people usually pay little attention to law and morality
C.civilization brings much harm to people
D.the lack of virtue is becoming more severe
73.Why does the author mention the psychological condition of the driver in Paragraph Three ?
A.To give an example of the various reasons for road accidents.
B.To show how important it is for drivers to be emotionally healthy.
C.To show some of the inaccurate estimations by researchers.
D.To illustrate the hidden tensions in the course of driving.
74.The following is mentioned as being responsible for the road accidents Except .
A.careless bicycle-riders
B.mindless people walking in the street
C.irresponsible drivers
D.irresponsible manufacturer of automobiles
75.Which of the following best reflects the author’s attitude toward a future without traffic accident problems ?
A.Doubtful yet still longing for. B.Happy and rather confident.
C.Surprised and very pleased. D.Disappointed and deeply worried.

Houston is home to cowboy culture, space travel, art cars and much more.
Two brothers established Houston in 1836.Augustus and John Allen were land developers from New York state.
They purchased more than 25 square kilometers of land in a low-lying area near a small river, or bayou. They named the town after a hero of Texas history, Sam Houston. The Allens wanted to build a city that would become a center of government and commerce. They succeeded.
Houston soon became a center for the cotton trade, then later the oil industry. The Port of Houston links the city to the shipping traffic in the nearby Gulf of Mexico.
The capital of the state of Texas is Austin. But Houston for a time in its early years was the capital of the Republic of Texas.
Texas was part of Mexico until a rebellion by Anglo-American colonists and Tejanos, Mexicans living in Texas. After that, the territory was an independent republic for almost ten years.
In 1846, Texas became the twenty-eighth state.
Today, Houston is the fourth largest city in the United States. Two million people live there. The area now spreads over more than one thousand six hundred square kilometers of southeastern Texas. Oil and gas exploration are still important to the Houston economy. But other industries have also grown over the years. One of these is the space industry.
Houston is home to the Johnson Space Center. Astronauts train there. And it is also where the NASA space agency has its Mission Control. Controllers direct space shuttle flights from Houston, just as they did with the old Apollo flights to the moon.
Movies like “Apollo Thirteen” have only added to the image of Houston as “Space City”.

书面表达
Dear editor,
I’m writing to tell you about a food poisoning incident. Several days ago, my neighbor family ate a bag of fake food from the market. After the meal, they had stomachaches and brought up what they had eaten as their faces turned pale. Fortunately, another neighbor passed by only to find the accident and immediately called the ambulance, which carried them quickly to hospital. After several hours’ treatment they finally escaped from death.
From this all of us have realized the importance of food safety. As some illegal business men are only interested in making profits in the race to become rich quickly, they seldom care about the necessary safety measures and hygiene or care what happens to consumers. They must be charged by law. Meanwhile I do hope the whole society shall begin taking actions to protect people’s life safety.
Yours xxx
